The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine laced with red cherries, tobacco, cedar and underbrush, all supported by a firm tannic spine. Argiano's 2006 Brunello shows beautiful inner perfume and the structure to develop positively for a number of years. Deep ruby in color, infused with luscious black cherries and anise, filled with vintage silk, bracketed by fine tannins. Floral notes appear on the vibrant, polished finish. The estate's Brunello spent 12 months in French oak (which is mostly felt in the wine's textural richness) and completed its aging in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. read more »

Grape type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Up on Howell Mountain, 2007 would prove to be one of the great harvests of our lifetimes. But when the Spectator upgraded the vintage rating to 99 points, many of our 'friends' managed to forget our first names.
Not so at Ladera. Jerry didn't forget. At least not entirely. Over a year ago, we muscled out a chunk of Karen Culler's 2006 powerhouse. Opaque purple to the edge, packed with wild berry concentration, Tanzer described it as a "suave, classy, essentially gentle wine (that) finishes with mounting tannins, great sweetness of fruit and terrific grip." Think he liked it?
The only problem with Brote Negro is the size of its production. Just 60 cases of this Tanzer 94-pointer (read the 100-word review below) will make it to the US, 20 of which have been earmarked for WineAccess blue-chippers. read more »

Grape type: Chardonnay
When searching out Chardonnay that might bridge the gap, you might find an outlying vintage of top shelf Chassagne or Puligny. Maybe a Corsin Fuisse from a warm harvest like 2009. But for the most part, you'll never come up with one that's been grown on the coldest spot of the California coast. Except today.
Steve Tanzer, the toughest Chardonnay critic on the planet, rated Adam Tolmach's 2009 Solomon Hills Chardonnay 91 points -- as high as Tanzer ever goes for an under-$30 bottle from California. read more »
Region: California > Napa > Spring Mountain District
Grape type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark purple to the edge with explosive ripe currant aromas, laced with dried flowers. Rich and powerful on the attack, packed with ripe cassis concentration, yet somehow light on its feet, buttressed by fine mountain tannins. It's delicious on Day 1, but on Day 2, true to the winemaker's signature, this one fills out, puts on weight, and really starts strutting its stuff. read more »
